18th March 2012
Skiing: Chamrousse Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: Cloudy Max Speed: Distance Covered:
Thursday 15th Mar.2012 – Off to France for 90 days :)
Leave Felixstowe 11:20 am, good trip to shuttle, train delayed a little.
Set sat-nav to avoid tolls, got in a bit of a muddle to start, then head
into Belgium for free motorway :) Stopped for the night in a lay by on the
A4 near Namur with lots of Lorries, a bit noisy but knackered and sleep
really well :)
Friday 16th Mar.2012 – Day travelling.
Drive on through Belgium and Luxemburg, surprisingly hilly and pretty.
Lovely sunny day, 20 degrees! Fill up with diesel in Luxemburg, only 1.29
Euro’s a litre!!! about 40p cheaper than England. Drove back into France
and stopped the night up a hill near a flood lit tower by St.
Denis-en-Bugey in a car park with a great view. Went for a walk as the
sunset to the tower :)
Saturday 17th Mar.2012 – Travelling with sightseeing.
Not such a good night’s sleep :( winds in the trees! Woke up early to
check the sunrise but too cloudy. Dressed and breakfast and out walking by
9:30 am. We walked for an hour around the top of the hill on a circular
path popular with joggers and bikers in a wood on the lookout for birds,
not much about apart from a large buzzard. Then set off along a fantastic
valley road toward Chambery, taking a small detour around the lovely Lac Du
Bourget :) We parked at the marina in Aiz-Les-Bains and walked to the
nature reserve and saw some cool ducks. Had a sandwich at the end of the
harbour wall and enjoyed the sunshine. Set sat nav for Chamrousse but it
played up a bit on the mountain road but we made it to the reception at
about 5:30 pm and booked into our small but nice ground floor apartment, a
Groupon bargain - £340 for the week including two 7 day adult lift passes
– the lift passes alone would be 338 Euro’s !!!! – We love Groupon
:)
Sunday 18th Mar.2012 - Skiing and open air swimming in the snow :) ***
Woke up to a windy and cloudy day :( but still at the lifts a short walk
away by 10 am, we had to buy the ski insurance for the week and Mag had to
have her skis adjusted for her new boots. We are surprised how busy the
resort is with a lot of German and Poles!!! also loads of kids playing
follow my leader in ski school. As the weather wasn’t brilliant we
decided to take it easy on the first day as we haven’t been for a year :(
and spent the morning on the nice tree lined runs of Chamrousse 1700 and
1750. The snow on the piste is in good condition even though by the look of
things it hasn’t snowed for awhile :( the off piste looks crusty and
brown and best avoided! We decided to go back to our apartment for lunch as
it was a bit breezy on the lifts and I had worn my Gath helmet I use for
speed sailing and it was giving me a headache :( During lunch the cloud
came in and it started to snow so we knocked the afternoon skiing on the
head and relaxed and read our books. At three we wrapped up for a walk in
the snow and went to have a look at the free outdoor heated pool, there
were a few braving the falling snow in the pool swimming and playing
snowballs!!! So we went and got our swimming stuff and joined them :) You
started off in a warm pool indoors and swam through a plastic curtain to
swim in the large pool which was lovely and warm despite the falling
snow!!! We spent 15 minutes in the Jacuzzi with a nice Scottish family
before returning to the pool to do a few lengths – so a surreal
experience swimming in the snow, not to be missed for the world!!! The snow
is still falling and our poor old van is now under four inches of snow and
the windsurfing boards have all but disappeared, apparently more snow
tomorrow before brightening up could be some good skiing – fingers
crossed for some blue skies too !
